Arizona
Many people retire to Arizona permanently, and many only live there for the winter months. The summers get hot, but there are cities and areas in higher parts of the state that have nice summer weather
The state is popular for retirement because seniors are catered to in many ways. Developments like Del Webb's Sun Cities and many RV parks across the state, provide almost anything a retired couple may want.
It seems that with lots of winter visitors, everyone acts like they are on vacation, and set out to have a good time. Most activities for seniors have a social component, and everyone is very friendly. Most winter visitors make friends and look forward to seeing them each winter. The permanent resident retirees like having the winter people come too, as many more activities are planned in the winter months, and many of them have made friends with the winter residents.
There never has been a better time to buy a residence in Arizona. Prices are very low compared to just a few years ago. Search the Greater Phoenix MLS Listings.
Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grande, Sun City Festival, etc., are all Dell Webb developments that were started in the 60's by him. They are still building these retirement communities fifty years later (Sun City celebrated it's 50th anniversary in 2010), even though Mr. Webb has passed away. These small cities (on the outskirts of Phoenix) offer just about anything a retired person could want, from recreation centers that provide all the services mentioned on this site, to libraries, shopping centers, business centers, etc. All planned and designed ahead of time. Golf carts are a favorite means of transportation on the wide paved streets.
Phoenix Weather & Climate
Phoenix's year-round clear skies, sunshine and mild temperatures along with its abundance of recreation and great sightseeing, makes it America's Premier vacation or retirement destination. Located at an elevation of 1,117 feet, the weather is warm and usually dry. The yearly high average temperature is a very pleasant 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
Of course it's hot during the summer months, but its low humidity makes the summer heat more comfortable. However, summer means it's water recreation time. Swimming pools, water parks, boating on the lakes, floating the Salt River and water-skiing.
